Camping Out in Manhattan NYC: Discover Outdoors Foundation Founder Camps Out in Soho Store Window to Raise Funds for Urban Youth Adventure Programs
Camping for a Cause Kicks Off Outdoor Rise Adventure Festival
Urban adventurer Kirk Reynolds is going to set up camp in a New York City store window until the public sets him free. The event will raise funds and awareness for the Discover Outdoors Foundation, for which Reynolds is founder and chairperson. Camping for a Cause begins on June 14 at 11:00am at the Fjällräven retail store located at 38 Greene Street in Soho and ends when the donation goal of $5,000 has been reached.
The Discover Outdoors Foundation (DOF) is a nonprofit organization that seeks to improve education for underserved urban youth in New York City by providing them with life-changing outdoor experiences. Since its inception in 2012, the Foundation has provided the opportunity for hundreds of kids and teens to experience the outdoors for the first time through activities including hiking, camping, snowshoeing, fishing, and more.
“Our mission is to make the natural world available and accessible to everyone, regardless of their resources,” says Reynolds, who founded the organization as a way to give back to his local community in partnership with popular NYC-based adventure company Discover Outdoors. “What better way to spotlight the importance of creating opportunities for everyone to experience nature than to camp out in the heart of the urban jungle?”
Venue sponsor Fjällräven has generously pledged to match all donations up to $2,500 to help reach the $5,000 goal. Donation receipts can also be redeemed at the Fjällräven store for 10% off all merchandise during the weekend June 14-15. New Yorkers are encouraged to visit the campsite in person to experience outdoor education each hour on the hour, including First Aid and Cooking Without Electricity.
Camping for a Cause kicks off Outdoor Rise, New York City’s annual adventure festival featuring one-of-a-kind outdoor adventure experiences, happening June 21-27. Outdoor Rise brings the spirit of adventure to the city through seven days of activities, classes, competitions, lectures, and films, with events open to the public in all five boroughs. Events are $5 or less and all proceeds benefit the Discover Outdoors Foundation. Registration is open now at www.OutdoorRise.com.
