BENEFITING: SIOUX YMCA
In 1971, the Sioux YMCA officially opened Leslie Marrowbone Memorial YMCA Camp on the banks of Lake Oahe. Since then the services and programs provided by Camp Marrowbone have continued to offer a unique resident camp experience to all youth living on Reservations in South Dakota and many non-reservation children. Leslie Marrowbone Memorial YMCA Camp is dedicated to serving and supporting the children and youth of the Cheyenne River Reservation by ensuring a safe, positive, fun and energetic summer camp experience. Through cultural educational activities, outdoor education, games and various forms of art we strive to offer our campers opportunities for creativity, self-discovery and a sense of belonging. Campers have the opportunity to enjoy sports, games, arts and crafts, water activities, special excursions and friendship, while learning the important character values of Generosity, Bravery, Respect and Wisdom from a trained, experienced and caring staff.
The Sioux YMCA provides a summer long Day Camp for local youth. Day Campers enjoy themed programming weeks, the opportunity to engage in imaginative activities that nurture their spirits, challenge their minds, and strengthen their bodies. Day Camp is an opportunity for youth on the Cheyenne River Reservation to experience an unforgettable summer of fun. And while they’re taking part in unique experiences and adventures, they’re also building self-esteem, developing interpersonal skills and making lasting friendships and memories.
Currently resident camp costs approximately $350/week per camper and Day Camp costs about $150/week per camper. In commmunities with high unemployment and widespread poverty families are not in a position to cover these costs. The Sioux YMCA provides camperships to all of our campers and day campers. As we continue to expand our programs and grow we envision our Day Camp program reaching more communities acrosss the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. That expansion will require funding for transportation, staff and supplies. We need help to do this. Your donations will be used to provide financial support to these important summer programs and to continue to serve children across the Cheyenne River Reservation.
