BENEFITING: CAMP CARE INC
EVENT DATE: Sep 12, 2015
Camp CARE is a place where kids who have cancer can just be kids. A week long summer camp and other fun activities are provided throughout the year at no cost to the families. Camp is a place where the kids can escape, temporarily, their harsh realities and just have fun with other kids who are fighting the same battle. Each year, camp ends the week with a Prom. In order to get ready for the big night, volunteers set up a "Transformation Station" where kids come for hair, make-up, and dress fittings. I will never forget the year when one little girl sat down at my station wearing her big, blue, poofy dress requesting her hair to be curled and bright red lipstick. As I looked at her wisps of hair, I was afraid of burning her, so I unplugged my curling iron so it could cool down. While polishing her nails, doing her make up, and pretending to curl her hair, she excitedly talked nonstop about all she had experienced during the week - the polar bear swim, arts and crafts, riding in a boat on the lake, and all the laughter she was sharing with her friends. She was truly having the time of her life, and so was I because her enthusiasm was so contagious! As she spoke, the time flew by as I listened to all her stories. But, finally, it was time for the big reveal. I handed her a mirror, and when she looked at herself, she gasped, saying "I'm beautiful!" I will never forget that moment, or her. She was a child. And she was beautiful. But not because she had visited Transformation Station. She was beautiful because she was strong, because she was fighting a battle bigger then herself and would not allow it to defeat her spirit, and because she still knew how to laugh and find excitement despite her suffering. She made the world beautiful simply because she was beautiful. Please join my team, the Camp Minions, and the other volunteers at Camp CARE as we prepare for our biggest fundraiser of the year. It costs almost $600 per camper, and last year we were able to send 186 kids from Levine's and Hemby's to camp. You can help support us by either making a donation or by participating in the 5k on September 12, 2015. Thank you!
