BENEFITING: YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit
ORGANIZER: YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit
EVENT: YMCA Camp Nissokone
I didn't go to camp as a kid. I didn't know much about the YMCA. I started at Camp Nissokone as a Dishwasher because it was close enough to my parent's house to ride my bike. From the dishroom window I could see the counselors and campers in the dining hall, singing songs and wearing costumes. I didn't get it at all. That's all changed now.
It took a few years, but I finally 'got it.' Camp, and the YMCA, are about opportunity. Opportunity to grow as an individual in a supportive environment, with the encouragement of great mentors. The opportunity to make great friends. Opportunity to learn skills that help kids believe in themselves. It's more than sailing, ziplining and horseback riding. It's about believing that you can master a new skill, overcome fears, make responsible decisions and learn to connect with others as part of team. I believe with absolute certainty that the friendships and people skills gained at camp help kids learn to how to be an important part of a healthy community and a responsible, respectful, caring, honest, person. Our staff at Nissokone are passionate about making a difference in the world one child at a time.
In 2015, we helped make 74 overnight camp sessions possible. I'm absolutely determined, almost fanatic, to make more possible for more kids in 2016 because I've seen and experienced first-hand the life-changing opportunities Camp Nissokone provides..
Give. And do so much more.

"I had originally decided to go to camp because I wanted to ride horses every day for two weeks straight. What ended up being the real camp story was something I never expected and has totally changed me for life. I can't even express using words how I felt about myself before Nisso. It was not. good. I have a pretty good memory, so there are many things in my life that I feel I'll remember forever. One thing I know I'll never EVER forget is the parking lot for the bus. I was scared senseless because I was convinced that the only friends I was going to make were the horses. Then I got on the bus and this girl who looked so much cooler than me wanted to sit with me on the ride to camp. Then after spending 3 hours with me she still wanted to be bunk mates. I still remember not knowing how to react to that. That stupid sign on the front of the bus said "FUN BOUND". It should have said "YOUR LIFE IS GOING TO CHANGE FOREVER TODAY. BE PREPARED." Thanks, Piper. Not to get all sentimental on y'all, but I always thought you should know how important that was for me. I'm seriously tearing up right now. That place was nothing short of magic. Amusingly enough, I have all the free access to horses that I want now, and all I want is Nisso. You’re never be the same again, whether you realize it right away or later on."
