Incorporated in 1974, Camp Ruggles began as a special project of the RI Association of Mental Health. Our mission is offer a summer day camp to children whose behavioral and emotional disabilities require year-round support.
A medical diagnosis of behavioral and emotional disabilities can stem from a broad range of genetic and social risk factors. Whether genetic or social, behavioral and emotional disabilities impact upon the healthy development, physical growth and emotional well-being of all children. But for our campers, their diagnoses and life experiences often preclude them from attending Rhode Island’s traditional summer day camp programs.
Today, Camp Ruggles remains Rhode Island’s only therapeutic summer day camp exclusively dedicated to children ages 6-12, medically diagnosed with emotional and behavioral disabilities. In the year 2014, we celebrated our 40th Anniversary. Since our inception, we have served more than 2,400 campers.
More than 30 agencies, including school departments, group homes, Bradley and Hasbro Hospitals, and mental health and human service agencies, make referrals.
The board and staff of Camp Ruggles remains dedicated to the goal of accepting those campers considered most “at risk” including children under state care/supervision as well as children from Rhode Island’s urban core residing in low-income, single parent families.
Thanks to annual philanthropic support, we are proud to note no qualified child has ever been turned away because of the inability to pay camper fees.
Camp Ruggles accepts children regardless of family income, race, creed or ethnic origin. Camp Ruggles is accredited by the American Camping Association (ACA) and licensed by the RI Departments of Education, Health and Human Services.
