BENEFITING: CAMP SUNSHINE AT SEBAGO LAKE
ORGANIZER: CAMP SUNSHINE AT SEBAGO LAKE
In honor of #GivingTuesday, Camp Sunshine is asking our supporters to help us raise $25,000, which is enough to sponsor ten children with life-threatening illnesses and their families during one of our illness-specific sessions in 2016. All donations are appreciated and will go directly to support our programming.
Camp Sunshine provides respite, support, joy, and hope to children with life-threatening illnesses and their immediate families from around the world through the various stages of their journeys. The year-round program is free of charge to all families, and includes 24-hour onsite medical and psychosocial support. Camp Sunshine also provides bereavement sessions for families who have had a child pass away as a result of a life-threatening illness.
I personally have been fortunate enough to volunteer at Camp Sunshine. I volunteered with the teenage group during the Diamond-Blackfan Anemia (DBA) session. The camaraderie that I witnessed - among children living with the rare disease, their siblings, and their parents - showed me how important it is for these families to know that they are not alone. DBA is a rare disease with about 25 to 35 new cases in the United States and Canada each year. I saw first hand the need for these kids to be able to have respite and services provided by Camp Sunshine. The teens made new friends, participated in leadership and challenge courses, attended sessions with counselors, and the parents were able to learn of prospective treatment options from researchers in the medical field.
It is our goal to offer respite services to every family who applies to attend at no cost. As one of the only facilities in the United States that offers programming for every member of the immediate family, not just the ill child, Camp Sunshine continues to receive referrals from over 100 of the nation's top treatment centers. The availability and reach of Camp Sunshine's services are completely contingent upon the assistance of thousands of loyal volunteers, as well as the financial support of generous donors - like yourself.
Join us in the weeks leading up to #GivingTuesday as we give thanks, give back and give hope to families of children living with DBA and other illnesses this holiday season.
