We all want to see a CLEAN Patterson Park, and we hear you when you say that we need more trash receptacles that don’t migrate or disappear.  So it’s time to launch….the Yes We CAN Campaign!  $12,000 from you = 20 new permanently installed trashcans!!!

Goal


We are raising the funds necessary for 20 new, permanently installed cast iron trashcans to be placed throughout the park!

Our goal for this campaign is to raise $12,000 from our members and friends!

Twenty installed trashcans will cost a total of $27,000. But through the amazing generosity of BGE ($5,000) and an anonymous donor ($5,000), we are already well on our way.  

Raising the next $12,000 from Park neighbors and our members will unlock an additional $5,000 matching gift from one of our best Friends, and we will have the total needed to get these trash cans ordered and on their way to their permanent homes in Patterson Park. 

And now it is up to you...Can we do it? Can our community come together to raise $12,000 to make Patterson Park cleaner? Yes we CAN!






Impact


New installed trashcans in high traffic areas will encourage responsible disposal of dog waste and other trash, which in turn keeps that nastiness out of the Boat Lake, playgrounds, and even out of storm drains which lead to the Bay. Twenty trashcans might not totally fix the problem, but it is a great start.






FAQ


How will you decide where the cans are placed?

We will divide the park into 5 sectors and evenly distribute the new cans throughout these areas (taking into consideration the existing installed trashcans), placing them in high traffic and gathering spots…near park entrances, park benches, etc.


When will the cans be installed?

Once the campaign is complete, we’ll order the trashcans right away and work with a vendor to install concrete pads in the designated areas. If all the pieces of the puzzle come together and the weather cooperates, we plan to have the first round of these installed by the end of the year.


How much does each can cost, and WHY?

Believe it or not, each of these beauties costs $1,000. We have added an administration fee per can (which covers the shipping and installation costs (concrete pad and labor), potential online fundraising fees (credit card processing), and a plaque for each can saying “Donated by...”), bringing the cost per can to $1,350. 

These cans are from the Victor Stanley Company. Durable and nice-looking, they are currently the standard for Patterson Park.


I want to cover the cost of one can (or my group wants to cover the cost of a can). Will I get my name on it if I want?

 

Yep. We plan to put "Donated by..." on every can. We imagine many of them will say, "Donated by members of the Friends of Patterson Park", but some will certainly read "Donated by (YOU FABULOUS CREATURE) or (THIS AMAZING NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION)".

 

I am a business owner. Can my business donate for a trashcan?

Of course! If you contribute the cost of one can, the plaque on the can will read, “Donated by (YOUR AWESOME BUSINESS WHO CARES ABOUT THE COMMUNITY)”.


If I donate for a can, does that make me a member of the Friends of Patterson Park?

So, the funds raised through Friends of Patterson Park "membership" go to support our general operating fund, which we use to create and staff all of the great free programming (athletics, festivals, volunteer programs, etc.) and park stewardship we provide. We very much need these funds to continue to do these things for you and would be so grateful if you would make your membership gift separately from this very specific project. You can become a member HERE.


Why can’t the city just put in trashcans?

That would be awesome, we agree! But the reality is that, due to reductions in Baltimore City Recreation & Park’s budget, the provision of trashcans isn’t a priority at this time. Baltimore City spends below half the national average per resident on its city parks, ranking Baltimore near the bottom in comparison to our nation’s 55 largest cities*…meaning that if we want the programs and services we know our community needs to keep this park great, we need to make up the difference. That’s what the Friends of Patterson Park does with its member contributions, and why we are asking you to assist!

What if we raise more than we need for 20 trashcans?

Well, then, we’ll get more! Any remainder will go to the Friends of Patterson Park general fund, which is used for free park programming, maintenance on the Pagoda, fountain, cannons, and more. Visit www.pattersonpark.com for more details.
