THE STORY:

I’m 2 weeks away from running my 9th Marathon. My first was in Victoria in 2001, and my last was in London, UK 2013. On May 7th in Vancouver, I will be running for the Canadian Mental Health Association. Please help me reach my goal of $1000 Each marathon I have completed is a cherished memory. But, why run a Marathon? Why train through all weather conditions, out before the dawn or hooting with the owls? And, once you’ve completed one why run another? I’ve always enjoyed playing team sports and running with a club or group, it checks the comradery box. But RaceDay… that is all about challenging and competing against yourself. Pushing a boundary maybe you considered unattainable… An empowering and often addictive experience that calls you back for more. Running a marathon (42.2km/26.2Miles) is an obvious physical challenge but with a good training program and support you can get there. Your deepest challenge by far is a mental one. This stops many from even starting the journey. You doubt your ability to complete the training, to push past the bad days, the reasons not to lace up your shoes, the list is long and often very personal. But with each step you take you become more powerful. Hopefully everything stays on track and you get to race day healthy. You’ve done the work, you’re as ready as you can be. Now your limiting factor is your mental toughness. Can you push through the discomfort, the pain, the doubts, your body is yelling “stop/walk/rest” ? In our day to day lives very few of us experience a mental challenge like this and that is what draws me to marathons more than anything else. Sadly those that struggle with Mental Health problems experience difficulties I don’t profess to understand but the link I make, and the question I ask is… How many marathons do they push through weekly, monthly? I have many friends and family that fight this battle, as I’m sure you do. Please pledge me what you can and wish me luck on May 7th as I run for myself and I run for others. Thank you, Pete.
