BENEFITING: ECOCATALYST FOUNDATION INC
This fundraiser will empower Cape West Coast South Africa middle schhol and high school students to engage in water quality monitoring, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education, and citizen advocacy democracy building - a powerful combination!
Teachers and students will engage in biological (long term) and chemical (short term) water quality monitoring (WQM) of the Berg River and the Langebann Lagoon on the Cape West Coast of South Africa. Students will learn about the holistic global best practice of Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) and they will also tie in their water quality monitoring activities with pre-designed STEM lesson plans, strenghtening their science, technology, engineering, and mathematics knowledge - required learning for studntes in the 21st century.
In addition, students will take that knowledge and advocate for clean water in thier communities, educating their communities and meeting with elected officials and government agencies - strengthening the democratic process.
This integrated WQM-STEM-Democracy building approach has been very effective with Centrul National de Mediu (www.environment.md), an ECF environmental NGO partner n Moldova.
ECF's local partner for this program is the Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve (www.capebiosphere.co.za), and students in Moldova, South Africa and New York City will have opportunities to collaborate and share learning experiences.
Help us help these students in Cape West Coast South Africa improve their environment, expand their STEM knowledge, and be active citizens in advocating for clean water!
