CAPPA Latinoamerica Volunteer Trip
Organized by: Katrina Fuller
Amazing things are happening at the hospital, which delivers about 100 babies a day, in Guayaquil, Ecuador thanks to CAPPA Latinoamérica! All mothers receive prenatal and postpartum care from a midwife, and high-risk care from an obstetrician-gynecologist if medically necessary. Mothers now labor out of bed (reducing the cesarean rate by 3%), give birth in their position of choice, practice kangaroo mother care and breastfeeding, and are released at 2.5 pounds. As a result, birth and infant feeding outcomes are improving.
However, due to the disparity of the staff-to-patient ratio, directors are requesting the services of volunteer birth workers. As a perinatal educator, doula, lactation consultant, and developmental specialist, I dream to volunteer abroad for a week (August 7-13, 2016), providing continuous support for these women in need. In doing so, I hope to make a difference in their lives, while also learning more about the profession and myself. Thank you for taking the time to read and share my story, and considering a donation to help me reach my goal!
