With your generosity, we are certain this can happen soon! As the father of two very special girls that race together with me, I know that the positive energy surrounding the start line, the togetherness of every member preparing to "roll with the wind", the fearlessness of the athletes, the normalcy of the family, and the love we all have for each other is a therapy like no other.
A message from Holly’s Mom:
My name is Darlene Akers, I am Captain Holly's mom. Holly was born with Down Syndrome and has had a rough start in life. She had to undergo heart surgery after birth to repair her valve. Due to this she has a slow leak in the back of her heart that the Doctor says will either repair and seal as she grows or will lead to her needing surgery later. This also makes her fatigue easily and her ability to run is very minimal.
Life has dealt her some pretty stiff blows. Her biological mother was taken from her in a random act of violence when she was only 5 years old. She came to live with us and has become our child. Then a year and a half ago, She lost the her Dad, My husband to cancer. She does not let this get her down. She keeps going through it all, doing better than me most days with her amazing smile! She is what gets me out of bed in the morning and keeps me going. She is pure joy and love!
I want to fundraise to get Holly her own race chair... The fact of sitting in her chair and running or even walking has just expanded her personality. She is learning the competitive side of life that I am sure without Ainsley's Angels she would not be getting to experience.
I want to have her to have this experience every day of her life. If she has her own chair for us to use on a daily basis, I think she can expand even more. She opens up and her face glows when she sits in her chair and gets ready to roll!
Her vocabulary has expanded and she is getting more mature as she goes to each run. I feel this is directly linked to running and being in this chair, having this experience. Thank and please help Holly reach her goal of her own chair!!
