BENEFITING: REBUILD SUDAN
EVENT DATE: May 16, 2011
This summer I’m traveling to Africa to serve in the world’s newest country, the Republic of South Sudan!
HERE'S THE STORY:
As some of you may know, there is a lot happening in Sudan right now. After decades of civil war, with millions dead, displaced or lost, Southern Sudan just voted to secede from their neighbors to the north to become their own country. This war-torn region is in desperate need of some of the most basic services we often take for granted, such as schools, hospitals, roads, and so on.
It is an exciting and extremely critical time in South Sudan.
I’m going to Sudan to partner with Rebuild Sudan, a global NGO working to build schools in the region. Rebuild Sudan was founded by Michal Kuany, a former Sudanese ‘Lost Boy.’ Michael’s vision is to create a brighter future for his homeland through education. To learn more about Rebuild Sudan and Michael’s story, visit www.rebuildsudan.org.
MY ROLE IN ALL THIS:
Rebuild Sudan’s first project is to build a primary school in Jalle, South Sudan, which is Michael's home village. After much dreaming, strategizing and investment, construction on the school will finally be underway this May.
I am traveling to Sudan on May 16th to capture the construction of the school, to interview the people of Jalle, and to meet with and interview various government officials. My job is to capture & tell the story of their response to the construction of the school (in addition to capturing what is happening in Southern Sudan as whole during this historic time).
YOUR ROLE IN ALL THIS:
In order to go, I need you. It's relatively expensive to get to Southern Sudan, and I need your help to get there. I've estimated the total expenses of the trip to be close to $4,500.
I invite you to be a part of this critical moment in Southern Sudan. I believe that your support is about more than just helping the needy in Africa. As human beings, we’re all connected, and what you do for another, you do for yourself. As one woman said, "If you have come to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us walk together."
Questions about the trip? Please feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you for your support!
