Care for Real, a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization, has been serving the Greater Edgewater community for over 40 years. We provide free programs and services to those in need including food distribution five times a week; deliveries to the homebound; a clothing closet; a pet pantry; a lending library; case management referrals and an Employment Resource Center to help our clients self-stabilize and get back on their feet.
Up through 2007, Care for Real served approximately 10,000 annually. But when the economy collapsed and so many found themselves unemployed and underemployed, Care for Real’s numbers began to skyrocket. By the close of 2012, we served over 52,000. As we work through 2013, we have seen a number of record setting food distribution days: in August 2013, Care for Real fed more than 5,200 in one month and in September 2013, we served over 200 clients (feeding more than 500) in a single day. This year, Care for Real estimates we will serve more than 62,000.
Join us for the Greater Chicago Food Depository's 31st Annual Hunger Walk on Saturday, June 25 at Chicago's beautiful and historic Jackson Park on the shores of Lake Michigan. Funds raised by the Hunger Walk support a local network of food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters fighting hunger every day throughout Cook County.
Over 30 years, the Hunger Walk has grown into the area’s largest anti-hunger rally and a strong symbol of our shared belief that No 1 Should Go Hungry. Last year's event brought 14,300 walkers to the lakeshore to raise funds and awareness for the fight against hunger in Cook County. With live entertainment and activities for all ages, the Hunger Walk is fun and impactful event for the whole family, friends and coworkers.
