The Foundation for Children/Medassist has since the 1990s provided support for orphans in Crimea , working in close harmony with the Republic Children's Hospital and its Physician-Director in the Crimean capital, Simferopol. Beginning in 2006 The Foundation has annually sent a team of specialists to perform corrective surgeries on Crimean orphans with severe congenital or post-traumatic deformities, which had rendered them ineligible for adoption. Since then, following such surgeries many of these children have found families, both in the Ukraine and United States. Sadly, following the Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014, we are no longer welcome, and our efforts have come to an abrupt halt. Now, however, we are planning to resume our work in Ukraine, our team once again finding an enthusiastic welcome in the city of Lviv, near the Polish border. Svetlana, the daughter of the former Director of the Republic Children's Hospital, has come to Tallahassee, Florida, and under the auspices of our Foundation is earning a degree in American Law. It is her hope with such a degree act as a powerful intermediary for the orphans and our Foundation's efforts in their behalf. Entirely self-funded, except for some donations from our local Rotary Club of which we are members, it is our hope by this means to appeal to you for assistance to carry on what is and has been such a good work.
