“If You Could Only Imagine”
Remember those words, grab my hand as I walk you on a short journey, and share our story.
If you could only imagine, having a clean bill of health, active, living life, only to wake up and have it all taken away in an instant!
If you could only imagine, peaceful and restful nights, only to lose it, be awake for hours on end, and sometimes days - yeah, the medical term is classified as “insomnia.”
If you could only imagine, having 20/20 vision, then suddenly things become blurry, and then BOOM, darkness - total blindness!
If you could only imagine, taking normal breaths, then gasping for each breath, or depending on a machine to do it for you.
If you could only imagine, having the activity of your limbs, to limited ability, and now you’re totally immobile.
If you could only imagine, going to the doctors for routine / yearly check-ups, to monthly and now weekly visits, to what has turned into your new normal or feels like your second home.
If you could only imagine, passing by the local hospital, to now having a bed awaiting your arrival, and the staff knowing you by name because you’re there so much.
If you could only imagine, being full of energy to being confined to the bed because you’re too tired to move, let alone lift your head.
If you could only imagine, being upbeat and happy today only to be sad and confused tomorrow.
If you could only imagine, being told “I don’t know what you have, perhaps a common cold or flu; here’s some antibiotics and call me in 7 days.
If you could only imagine, returning back after those 7 days to be told, “You’re crazy, nothing’s wrong with you, you just want more medicine, please leave!”
If you could only imagine, going from taking a daily vitamin to pills like Prednisone, Methotrexate, Norco, Compazine, Remicade infusions, Acthar Gel injections, and countless other medication cocktails in order to function on a daily basis.
If you could only imagine, having a job you love to being forced to take an early retirement, or being placed on disability because you can’t work at all.
By now, you’re probably wondering what in the world am I talking about. Well let me help you.
An invisible, yet silent killer called “Sarc” for short. The medical term is “Sarcoidosis,” pronounced sar-coy-doe-sis. It’s a potentially fatal, inflammatory disease which affects the immune system causing damage to any organ in the body by attacking healthy tissue.
If you could only imagine, just throw Asthma, Pulmonary Fibrosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Blindness, Multiple Sclerosis, Fibromyalgia, Paralysis, Cardiac Arrest, Depression, Diabetes, Lymphoma, Parkinson, Hypertension, Cirrhosis, Menopause, Eczema, Influenza, Splenomegaly, Migraine, Cerebral Palsy, Gird, Pneumonia, Dementia, and Sudden Death into a blender; that’s kind of what it looks like!
This disease is also called “Snowflake” because no two people symptoms are alike. It doesn’t discriminate. It affects the young as well as the old. It has no race barrier - African American, Caucasian, Latino, and Native American. It has no economic barrier – poor, middle class, wealthy. It has no gender preference - male or female. It has no geographic region – North, South, East, or West.
If you could only imagine, the only common factor is the disease itself.
With joining The ArtVan Charity Challenge, this will give the Caring Hands Sarcoidosis Foundation the opportunity to not only bring awareness, but be the voice and the face of this deadly disease.
Who are we?
Caring Hands Sarcoidosis Foundation is resource in the community with a primary focus on empowerment, education, and support. We provide yearly retreats for Sarcoidosis survivors, families, and medical professionals. With the support and monetary donations from the ArtVan Challenge, it will aid us in the continuation of outreach; nevertheless, bridging the gap and advocating for those who don’t have the strength to do it on their own. The ArtVan Challenge will open the doors for us to provide transportation to doctor’s appointments, pay utility bills, purchase groceries, medications, and ultimately build an office in the Metro Detroit Area. Currently we have chapters in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, and Alabama, with one goal and that’s to bring awareness. We wear purple for us. We are our brother and sister’s keepers.
