Here's carlen's story:
December 15, 2014, we (Carlen's parents, and family) have a normal day, excited to see Carlen enter the world later that night, as mommy was having an induced labor at 39 weeks, at the hospital, minutes after being hooked up to monitors, doctors noticed carlen was in distress, and rushed mommy and baby to the operating room for an emergency Caesarian birth, the doctors were already predicting her to be "still born," seconds into this world, Carlen made a whimper and had a stroke, the nicu doctor preformed CPR to bring her back.
Carlen was shipped to a better equipped nicu that could handle "critically ill" newborns, there she was diagnosed with stroke, pulmonary hypertension, internal seizures a minute a part, she was hooked up to the ventilator, EEG monitors, pic line, feeding tube, and nitric oxide to keep her alive, at 20 days old carlen came home on two seizure medications, acting and playing like a normal, healthy, baby.
At 2 months old, mommy and daddy found out the stroke shrunk her brain, it now being two times smaller then it should be, a micro-skeletal skull, skull bones semi-severally overlapped, cortical vision impairment, and both parts of the brain hemisphere being affected by the stroke, the motor, memory, learning, and speech part of the brain being severally affected. Carlen now is a "high-risk, red-flag" candidate for cerebral palsy.
We plan to share Carlen's story every where, to any one who is willing to listen, and to share her journey as she grows, and to spread awareness that babies have strokes too!
