BENEFITING: CARNEGIE LIBRARY OF PITTSBURGH
ORGANIZER: CARNEGIE LIBRARY OF PITTSBURGH
EVENT: Pittsburgh Marathon 2017
EVENT DATE: May 07, 2017
Pittsburgh Half Marathon. Help me get off my duff, finish 13.1 miles, and support the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh!
My goals are to: 1) raise money for a worthy cause; and 2) walk/run to the finish line, which I hope to cross of my own volition and before the race organizers sweep the course. Please help me accomplish both goals, even if the second goal seems way too ambitious for this sedentary middle aged lawyer mom who hasn’t managed to run more than a few miles in a very long time!
I am supporting the Library for two main reasons:
1) The Library's role in early childhood education. We know how important quality early education is. Third grade reading scores are correlated to rates of high school graduation and rates of incarceration as an adult. Let's invest in our future now. I'd much rather pay for early education programming than for programming in a prison.
2) The Library's role in fostering our democracy. To quote Thomas Jefferson, "An educated citizenry is a vital requisite for our survival as a free people." Libraries remain valuable community resources; they provide access to information, and through them, we learn how to critically evaluate that information. How timely (and timeless) is that?
PS to those who note that I’ve run this distance before and am now being somewhat melodramatic, I say this: those runs were before I had two children, before I moved to a city where I had to buy a car and now drive everywhere, and before I gained more weight than I will publicly acknowledge (and which I largely attribute to the aforementioned children and car). Regardless, if a little melodrama can help the Library, then sign me up.
