The Story

EVENT DATE: Apr 10, 2016

Dear Friends, Family, Colleagues, Parents, Teachers, and Kids of All Ages:

In June of this year, my wonderful husband, Andy, and I will be leaving Tallahassee and moving to our vacation home in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida.  Andy first moved to Tallahassee in 1970 to take a position as assistant professor in the Department of Special Education at Florida State University.  I moved to Tallahassee in 1980 to attend school at FSU.  Together, we have lived a wonderful life her, raised our daughter, Jennifer, built two careers focused on improving the lives of children, and cherished our time with our church and the larger community. We have grown close to many people, and leaving here is not going to be easy for us. Although it has always been in our short-range plans to move to the beach, the need to move and simplify our lives has come into share relief since Andy had his stroke last year. For those of you who have not seen Andy lately, he is making remarkable progress and I am so proud of him!! Andy’s recovery has been nothing short of astounding, and we don’t want to take for granted the gift of life and time that has been given to us.

So, it seems right to celebrate Andy’s miracle and bring people together to say good-bye, but how? I have wanted to put on a recital to benefit Children’s Home Society (CHS), Adoptions Unit for quite some time. In the years I have worked as a child psychologist in Tallahassee and assessed special needs children, I have seen a particular need for mental health services among children who have been or are in the process of being adopted. Finding and keeping a “forever home” is often difficult for children and adolescents with a history of maltreatment and/or disabilities, and their needs are great. It is my hope that this recital will help fund programs at CHS which provide mental health services for adopted children and families. Although tickets will not be sold and the concert is free, we will be taking up a “love offering” for those of you who would like to make a donation, great, or small, to this cause.

Everyone is welcome, and if you know anyone who would be interested in attending, please share this information with them. If you are a parent, please bring your children with you to the concert!! It is particularly appropriate for children 8 years and older, and Riley, the therapy bunny, will be there. The music runs the gamut from Vivaldi to Sondheim, and each song was chose for its inspirational value. I love the music I have chosen, and I hope you will too. The recital will take place in the sanctuary at Faith Presbyterian Church and a reception in the parlor, just beyond the sanctuary, will follow.

Please come and help Andy, Jennifer, Riley, and me say good-bye to you and to Tallahassee while benefitting adopted children through Children’s Home Society. You have been an important part of our lives, and we want to celebrate with you. If you know you are going to be able to attend, please RSVP through text to (850) 766-1407 or via telephone at (850) 878-1441 by April 4, 2016.

Thanks so much, and we all look forward to seeing you on Sunday, April 10, 2016, at 2:30 p.m. in the sanctuary at Faith Presbyterian Church in Tallahassee, FL.

With deepest gratitude and affection,
