Carol's Challenge is a 2 day, 140 mile bike ride and fundraiser for the amazing non-profit organization Beads of Courage, Inc. that supports kids coping with serious illness. Carol Saker (That’s Me) and teammate, Kiersten Kern will start out at Cardon Children’s Hospital in Mesa, AZ and finish the ride at the Beads of Courage Headquarters in Tucson, AZ.
Carol’s Challenge started as a way for me (Carol) to challenge myself to get strong and to try to overcome my physical disabilities. I suffer from Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and a neurological disorder and exercise is my main method of coping without pharmaceutical drugs. So I wanted to see if I could get strong enough to ride 100 miles in one day. But just doing it for myself seemed strange and self-centered because I am a rocket booster kind of gal. Need that rocket in orbit today? Sure thing! I will strap myself on and throttle up the engines!
When Beads of Courage started their Team Beads of Courage program, I was totally thrilled – athletes could Carry A Bead during their competitive events, take pictures and tell kids about their experiences to inspire them and to let them know that people out there care for them and are dedicating their rides, walks, runs, sled dog races and trips to Outer Space (yes, you heard me right – Team BOC has Astronauts!) to give them hope and healing.
My teammate, Kiersten Kern also rides for wellness and healing. She is a survivor of breast cancer and is also one of those rocket booster girls! We started to train together and she joined Team Beads of Courage and rode in El Tour de Mesa carrying her first bead up Usery pass – a gnarly 3 mile uphill climb. Kiersten is brave and beautiful and tough and she joined the challenge to ride with me all the way to Tucson!
