Carolyn Collins - Boston Marathon 2016 for Amanda DaSilva
Organized by: Carolyn Collins
Event Name: 2016 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE Apr 18, 2016
On April 18, 2016 I will put my “run because you can…for those who can’t” mantra to the test – the ultimate test. I will be running the Boston Marathon in loving memory of Amanda DaSilva and in support of the love of her life, her son, Michael. He is an amazing kid– a good student and in the JROTC program. He hopes to attend college and is currently interested in becoming a doctor.
For those of you who didn’t know Amanda, she was a fighter. She grew up with my husband Dale in Somerville, MA. In fact, her twin sister, Sandra, dated Dale back in high school. Amanda was a single mother. Her 15 year old son Michael was her pride and joy, the love of her life. She had the most beautiful smile and “laughed and laughed”. She loved Duran Duran. She was a daughter…a sister…a twin…a cousin…a niece...an aunt…an amazing friend to so many. In 2013 she was diagnosed with Sarcoma and underwent aggressive chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. She was cancer free for a year! Unfortunately, because of her intensive treatment, she developed Myelodysplasia Syndrome (MDS) which progressed to Acute Myloid Leukemia. She continued to fight, always with a smile on her face. She was responding very well to the experimental drug regimen that MGH had her on. Her only hope was a bone marrow transplant. By the grace of God, a match was found. She was in the hospital preparing for her transplant when she passed away unexpectedly on November 29, 2015.
Why run 26.2 miles, you ask? Why? I run because I can…for those who can’t. Because it is the right thing to do. May 2014 marked the beginning of a family illness for me. The outpouring of support, love, kindness and compassion was overwhelming and humbling. I vowed to “pay it forward” so here I am running the Boston Marathon in hopes of raising money for an exceptional young mans future. Together, we CAN make a difference.
Please consider making a donation and a difference. No donation is too small and all donations are greatly appreciated. Also, feel free to forward this link to anyone you think may be interested in donating.
Much love, peace and gratitude, Carolyn
