BENEFITING: Friends Of Casa Materna
The Casa Materna Mary Ann Jackman is a home for at-risk pregnant women in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. The Casa Materna seeks to decrease the infant and maternal mortality rate in the Matagalpa region while ensuring a safe delivery and welcoming home for all mothers who arrive. We began our mission in 1991, and this year we are celebrating our 25th anniversary! To celebrate this milestone, our goal for our 25th anniversary campaign is to fundraise $25,000 in 25 days. The money you donate will provide salaries for our staff, meals for the women and sustainable, global health protocol for the Nicaraguan people. Please consider contributing!
Since the Casa's inception, over 17,500 women have given birth safely because of the hospitality, medical monitoring, and peace of mind the Casa Materna offers. In the 25 years since we began our important work, the maternal mortality death rate has decreased from 180 per 100,000 down to only 50 per 100,000 in Nicaragua. Women arrive to the Casa from the rural areas of Matagalpa 1-2 weeks before giving birth. At the Casa, women are provided with food, shelter, pre and post-natal care, and most importantly, a sense of belonging and community as they enter into a new phase of their lives.
The Casa Materna staff trains midwives in the most remote parts of the country and follows up with women in their home communities after they have given birth. The staff also works with rural youth to prevent adolescent births, the greatest source of high-risk births, by providing workshops in local schools and advocating for national statutory laws.
As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Casa Materna in 2016, know we are grateful for your love and support over the years. It is through prayer, encouragement, and donations over time that the Casa Materna can thrive and continue the good work being done to save lives and better the world. There is still much work to do as we look forward to the day when no woman dies in childbirth.
To give you an idea of how your generous donation could positively impact The Casa Materna, these price points indicate what even the smallest donation can accomplish:
- $10: Cost of housing one woman at The Casa for one day.
- $20: Covers one day of follow-up projects. The Casa has the ability to go into the small communities to check in with the women who visited the casa, hosting workshops on things like hygiene, basic care, etc. Learn more on our website.
- $50: Provides food, medicine, clothing, and shelter for the entire Casa for one day. These are basic daily needs to keep the women healthy and safe.
- $75: This contribution would cover one week of stay for a woman at The Casa Materna.
Or to celebrate the 25th Anniversary, feel free to donate on our “25” levels:
$25: The level of a typical introductory donation from supporters of The Casa.
$250: The cost of maintenence for repairs on emergency vehicles to transport mothers to hospitals when they’re ready to give birth.
$2,500: The cost of vehicle maintenence for an entire year, or insurance for our vehicles.
