Every year Casa Guatemala provides an education to an average of 250 of Guatemala's most vulnerable children. Currently there are 227 children from 17 different rural communities, as well as those children permanently in their legal care, studying at their primary school of which 52% are girls. Nearly 100 children live onsite and while the others travel back and forth from their villages each day. In addition to the regulated curriculum, the students of Casa Guatemala receive classes in English, Computer literacy, Library studies, Art and handicrafts, and sustainable farming practices on the large school farm. The farm not only trains the students in agriculture but also provides a base of fruits and vegetables for the kitchen, where the children also learn to cook healthy and nutritional meals.
There are an additional 25 students in secondary schools and universities around the country. Though Casa Guatemala is only responsible for the children in their legal care until they are 18, the organization continues to support them through their studies until they reach the highest level possible for each child. There are currently students studying law, medicine, computer graphics, primary education and accounting.
Casa Guatemala has a large staff to run their operation including the teachers that run the school and act as house supervisors for the children when they are not in class. There are farm workers, maintenance staff, boat drivers, social workers and administrative staff both onsite and in the offices in the city. Along with the team of international volunteers, this makes for up to 300 people to feed everyday. Additional costs stem from the cost of fuel used in running the generator to provide energy and pump water and for the transportation to and from the children's village everyday as it is only accessible by boat.
Casa Guatemala's operating budget is over $540,000 a year. At Friends of Guatemalan Children Inc, we strive to raise at least $100,000 per year towards these costs. Please help us to support the education fund for Casa Guatemala so that they can continue to provide these important services to the children in their care. There are no other options for these children; many walk for two or three hours to get there, usually without shoes and with only the clothes on their backs and stay throughout the school year, only occasionally going home for holidays or weekends when their parents can afford to come for them. Others don't have any other home to go to. They come from cases of abuse and abandonment and have suffered unimaginable horrors at the hands of the only people they had ever loved before meeting their Casa Guatemala family. It is our goal to give these children the best access to education possible so we can break the chain of extreme poverty and abuse that is so rampant in Guatemala.
Your one time or monthly donation can make a huge difference in the futures of these wonderful kids. Please help in which ever way you can to support Casa Guatemala's education program!
