BENEFITING: PROJECT CONCERN INTERNATIONAL
The first few weeks I was interning at Casa Materna, the women sat in front of a TV and didn't talk to each other. Two days ago on the way to the clinic I bought some string to make friendship bracelets; later that day, the women at the clinic were all sitting together making the bracelets, listening to the two Spanish songs I have on my Itunes, and making connections. A few women cried as they talked about how much they miss their families, and made bracelets "con amor" for their husbands. In the short time since I engaged them in this activity, they are walking in to my work space, asking to see pictures of my family/friends, and simply hanging out.
Many of the women must travel a long way from their homes and do not have family here to comfort them. Engaging the women in crafts projects such as making bracelets, baby clothes, and toys creates an environment of support.
I orginally created this fundraising site just to gather money to continue such activities for the women after I leave. I soon realized, however, that Casa Materna relies heavily on private funding like I am doing now to provide basic clinical services. I am currently in the process of implementing a new strategy for dining at Casa Materna to provide a constant source of income for the clinic. The Regional Director in Huehuetenango, Bal Gutierrez, is allowing me to direct much of the money I am able to raise myself towards the cafe proposal. In this way, any donations would go to helping build a sustainable future for Casa Materna to provide holistic health care and community education for indigenous women and their families. Please contact me if you would like to learn more about the Casa's services or what else I have been up to!
Join me in raising funds to help Casa Materna continue providing vital care for these high-risk moms.
As an example of ways you can make an impact~
$189 will allow 1 high-risk mom to spend 7 nights at Casa Materna
$27 pays for 1 night
$19 provides a new born kit with baby essentials
$109 provides ultrasounds for 4 women
$3,000 will enable 16 women to stay at Casa Materna and receive complete care
How much can we raise???
Why Casa Materna?
It has provided thousands of women from remote mountain villages with clinical attention, evaluation, medicine and other vital reproductive services to ensure healthy pregnancies and access to health services. This care transcends the clinical environment and contributes to the physical, emotional and psycho-social well-being of women.
