THE STORY:

Arwen & Jorge of SF Bay Area music ensemble “Cascada de Flores” have been given an exciting challenge! Help us raise $5,000 this summer and the East Bay Community Foundation will match your tax-deductible contribution!

¿QUé? (What?)

We, Arwen & Jorge of Cascada de Flores, venture forth as a duet to create a brand new project, which will feature original compositions as well as creative arrangements of old favourites and traditions.  We call this “Fly: el canto con alas”, or song with wings.

¿CÓMO? (How?)

You have 2 options for supporting FLY, thus becoming a member the ”FLY Team”:

1. DONATE, either anonymously, or as an active team member (with your own webpage on Crowdrise so that you can invite your own network), or by sending a check (written to “ShadowLight Productions” with “Cascada de Flores” in the memo.)

2. HOST A FUNDRAISING CONCERT this summer, in your home or in a special place in your community -contact us for more details @ info@cascadadeflores.com; 415-999-3340

¿QUIéN? (Who?)

We, Jorge Liceaga and Arwen Lawrence, are the co-founders of Bay Area music ensemble Cascada de Flores; we have been selected as East Bay Fund for Artists recipients from East Bay Community Foundation, which will provide us with the gift of time to delve into a new creative pursuit. As a duet we will create a new production, weaving together composed songs, poetry, dance, unlikely instrumentation and audience participation. The songs will be composed using the musical languages of the Américas (such as Mexico and the Caribbean) in which we have been immersed for our 18 years as Cascada de Flores.  The concert will touch on themes that are both personal to each of us, that connect us to our community, and to the larger word-wide social movement for peace and justice.

¿CUÁNTO? (How much?)

We first need to raise $5,000 from individuals like you! Then, the East Bay Community Foundation will match all funds raised. Their match will pay us to sit down and create. It will allow us to carve out the time usually spent in performing, organizing performances and maintaining necessary business activities to hone the necessary skills to compose, and to perform as a duet. The money that YOU donate can then be applied after our creative process: to both a video (a marketing tool leading to touring of the duet) and an album of our new work! A small percentage of the donated funds will be split to both help Studio Grand and its staff to present and market our performance, and to pay ShadowLight Productions a bit for their time and administration.

¿QUIÉN MÁS? (Who else is involved?)

We call this project a “composers-in-residence”, as our creation will take its final forms in residence at Studio Grand, an affordable space for art of many disciplines and for all members of the community of Oakland and the Bay Area. After dedicating two months to personal technique development, dual brainstorming and composition we will begin a residency at Studio Grand. They will provide us space to rehearse the performance, marketing and administrative support and co-presentation of performances that will help us to refine our material.

The amazing ShadowLight Productions most appropriately will be our first fiscal sponsor. Larry Reed and ShadowLight  have been a guiding light in our creative path throughout the years. We have composed and performed music for two pieces of Shadow theater using the musical language of traditional Mexican music; our inspiring experiences working collaboratively with Larry Reed and his team informs this next stage in our careers. Besides guiding us in this fundraising process, they  will accept and manage payments and make your donations tax-deductible!

Crowdrise is a fundraising platform for non-profits (Shadowlight Productions in this case). It allows those who donate to take their support futher, creating their own page from which they reach out to their own network.

¿MÁS? (More info!)

Fly: el canto con alas departs from our regular work in many ways. First and foremost, it will lay the groundwork for composition.  For eighteen years, we have arranged traditional music. This has deepened our musical vocabulary, and given us a language with which to compose. This project will enable us to find a process to follow in our composing, first as individuals, then as a small ensemble. This process will be organic to our interests, talents and personalities, and structured according to them.

Most of our work involves arranging material for larger ensembles from a trio to a sextet. In FLY, we feel that using just the duet will make the material more personal, and will give priority to our individual technical skills.   Ten years ago, we created a theatrical story-telling performance for children.  5 years ago, we finally did the same for adults in the form of Radio Flor, a theatrical concert celebrating the music, drama and humor of the early radio days in Mexico and Latin America. FLY will be our next theatrical project. It will be scripted and rehearsed as a whole.

Recently, we began to invite the audience to participate more. It has always been important to us to speak to our audience about the music and cultural stories that inspires us and our choices.  Now, we begin to ask them to sing along in key moments, clap certain rhythms and dance. Our values and musicians and teachers are beginning to take form in our performances: that everyone should sing and everyone should make music!  As the current political environment incites us to participate, we must all find our personal and collective voices, and we must take joyful moments for art.

Our partnership with Studio Grand honors our desire to be connected with like-minded artists in our Bay Area community; it gives us a physical space in which to give structure to the creation phase of our project, as it is dedicated to art making; and it gives our fans a more intimate view into our music process.  Studio Grand has a small living-room like environment that allows one to experience art up-close and encourages reaction and participation. It is also timely and important to us to support small spaces for artists in the East Bay, especially ones that are led by women of color such as Studio Grand’s Vanessa Camarena-Arredondo.  We hope that not only will we expand our audience, but that we will bring audience that is new to Studio Grand.

Thanks for reading, ¡muchas gracias!,

Arwen & Jorge
