BENEFITING: CAT TOWN
ORGANIZER: CAT TOWN
I am dedicating my fundraiser to my beloved Arcturus, one of the cats who inspired me to start Cat Town.
Shortly after my husband and I started volunteering at the Oakland shelter, eight years ago, Arcturus, then about two years old, was brought in from a hoarding situation, where he’d lived in a home with 35 other cats. I knew nothing then about under socialized cats, but my heart went out to Arcturus as he sat frozen in his cage, week after week.
Realizing that no one was coming for this cat, my husband and I adopted him. Before we took him home, we were cautioned by several people that he would likely remain a feral house cat. I didn’t fully get what that meant, but wanted to get him out of there, regardless.
Having no experience with such a fearful cat, I did everything wrong. I gave him access to the whole house right away, and hovered around trying to reassure him, while terrifying him, instead. It took months before he’d stay in the same room with us, and would bolt if we even glanced at him.
But, little by little, month by month, we started to earn his trust. And now? Oh my goodness, he is such a sweet and gentle soul. He greets me at the door, hops on my lap any chance he gets. When I wake up, and he sees my eyes are open, he runs over for a serious cuddle session. And he purrs and purrs.
If I didn’t see that all with my own eyes, I would never have believed that sort of transformation was possible. It’s from Arcturus that I came up with my saying for under socialized cats:
Love + Time = Magic!
Please help Cat Town save the cats, like Arcturus, who just need love and time to thrive!
Won’t you help Cat Town save Oakland’s at-risk shelter cats?
