EVENT: Saving Pets Challenge 2016

THE STORY:

I love cats. Like, I REALLY love cats. But that's not the only reason I support Cat Town. What’s important to me is the organization’s commitment to reduce the kill rates of Oakland’s most down-and-out felines – cats who are under-socialized, elderly, or in need of medical attention – by pulling them out of the stressful shelter environment and putting them into foster homes, or the Cat Town Café and Adoption Center, for some much needed TLC (pets and treats please!) while waiting for a permanent home. Please donate to my page. Any amount is huge!

Some of you know Glynda (to the left) as my lovable-but-no-bullshit cat with the smelliest farts and a heart of gold. Before being rescued by Cat Town, Glynda was found abandoned in a parking lot and brought to Oakland Animal Services, where she spent three months in a small cage. Her cute raspberry nose wasn't enough for potential adopters who only saw an unfriendly, stressed-out animal. Once set loose in the Cat Town Café, a magical place where one can go for coffee and leave with a cat, she declared herself Queen. She caught my eye on my first visit to the Cafe, perched on her favorite piece of cat furniture, encouraging chin scratches from visitors and rewarding them with long purrs and squinty eyes of approval. Cat Town gets the hardest-to-place cats out of the shelter and into a safe environment where they can relax, socialize, and reveal their true personalities.

When Cat Town was founded in 2011, 58% of cats who came to Oakland Animal Shelter were killed each year due to overcrowding and poor funding. Through a strong partnership with OAS and a model that includes our community in the socialization of “difficult” cats through the café and a dedicated network of foster homes, the organization has brought this euthanasia rate down to 10% and saved the lives of over 1,300 cats like Glynda.

Ok. So here it is. Someone cue Sarah McLachlan. This is the part where I ask you for money. If Cat Town raises the most and wins this challenge, we get an additional $50,000 on top of whatever we make. That’s vet bills for sick and injured cats, food and litter, and more space for saving even more cats! Anything you can contribute will help push us to the top. What’s that? You’re a dog person? Then I know you have a cat person friend who you’re constantly passive-agressively reminding. Send them this page and give them a little nudge to root for their team!
