BENEFITING: THE MAYORS FUND TO ADVANCE NEW YORK CITY
** Since starting this fundraiser, the marathon has been cancelled. Your or my opinion on this is irrelevant. What is important is that we continue to help those who have been so devastated by the tragedy of the hurricane. Support my cause, or find another, or donate your time. Just do what you can. I will still do a long run this weekend, simply because it makes me feel good - it helps me find balance it what can sometimes be a difficult world.
I have very mixed feelings about running the marathon on Sunday in the wake of the devastation left by Hurricane Sandy. While I feel the marathon should not occur given the struggle that so many New Yorkers are experiencing right now, whether or not I show up to the start line, the marathon will happen. If I protest the race, I take a stand, but help no one. So the best option is to run for a purpose.
Hurricane Sandy has caused death, homelessness and heartache, and has crippled this amazing city that I love. In the past, the marathon has celebrated and brought strength to New York City and I'm hoping it can do the same this year. New York Road Runners is donating $26.20 for each of the 40,000 runners in the marathon, which totals over $1 million to relief efforts. I would like to add to that total by fundraising for the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City. One hundred percent of donations to the Mayor's Fund are being dispersed to relief efforts and organizations, contributing food, water and hygiene supplies, as well as long-term relief and restoration efforts.
If you had any intention of supporting me through the marathon, whether in person or through positive thoughts, please donate to help those in New York who are truly suffering. Knowing that I am racing for a purpose is really the only way I can justify crossing the finish line.
Thank you and do what you can.
