Caz's Cause: Water for a Neighborhood in Haiti

We're Getting Closer to the Goal
September 07, 2016
Please help bring clean water to a neighborhood in Haiti, which is suffering from severe drought. For those who travel to Haiti, one of the first things you notice is how scarce water is in general, and how difficult it is to find clean water. My name is Kenn Speicher. When I was in Haiti with a service team following the 2010 earthquake, we became good friends with our interpreter, Caz. His full name is Cardinypierrelouis Souffrant. So you can see why he goes by Caz. Today, he is struggling to find water for his community. The drought in Haiti has made this even more difficult. Caz and his family live in a neighborhood with 6 other families. Recently, he contacted some of his U.S. friends with an idea that will make life a bit easier and healthier for them all. Caz is interested in building a rain-catchment cistern that will provide the 7 families with water that can be used for cooking, cleaning, and bathing. With additional purifying tablets or a purifying system, it could even be used for drinking. Caz provided an estimate for the materials needed to build the cistern, and if we can raise the funds for the materials, he has offered to pay the local construction workers himself. Here is the estimate for materials: 45 cement bags = $450 550 cement blocks = $275 Two big trucks of sand = $200 One big truck of gravel =$100 40 iron bars = $400 Total = $1425. We would also like to raise additional funds to provide a Noah portable water filter. These have been used at schools in Haiti. This portable filter would purify the water for all the families and could be maintained by Caz. Caz did not ask for this part of the project, but it would be a wonderful surprise to help our friend and his neighborhood. The addition of water purification would make the total we need to raise $2625. [As of September 7, 2016, we have $448 to go in order to reach the goal. We're almost there.] I hope you will join us in helping Caz bring clean water to the families in his neighborhood. Please accept our thanks and gratitude for any amount you can contribute. Please feel free to tell others you know about Caz's Cause.
