BENEFITING: CHESAPEAKE CLIMATE ACTION NETWORK
ORGANIZER: CHESAPEAKE CLIMATE ACTION NETWORK
EVENT: CCAN Polar Plunge 2016
EVENT DATE: Jan 30, 2016
On January 30th, I will embark on my 4th freezing run into the Potomac River to support the Chesapeake Climate Action Network.
I'll be joining this somewhat silly exercise for a very serious cause: boosting CCAN's on-the-ground organizing, so we can push harder, faster, and further for action on climate change in 2016.
2015 will be, by far, the hottest year on record. But it's also been one of the "hottest" years for climate action. Grassroots organizing compelled President Obama to (finally) reject the Keystone XL pipeline, pushed Shell's drilling rigs out of the Arctic, and passed a two-year fracking ban in Maryland.
Then, in Paris, world leaders struck a climate accord that, for the first time, states a worldwide goal of keeping temperature rise "well below" 2 degrees Celsius. However, that's on paper. The fine print of their emissions reduction commitments still doesn't add up to protecting a livable planet, or doing so in a just, equitable manner.
So, after Paris, it'll be our job at CCAN to pick up the pace locally. Our team of talented organizers across Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC are building the climate movement every day. They are the reason I stay inspired. We are taking on the biggest fights -- from passing big increases in clean energy policies to stopping monstrous new fracked gas pipelines.
Support my plunge and support the grassroots organizing it will take to translate global goals into rapid local progress!
