BENEFITING: CHESAPEAKE CLIMATE ACTION NETWORK
ORGANIZER: CHESAPEAKE CLIMATE ACTION NETWORK
EVENT: CCAN Polar Plunge 2016
EVENT DATE: Jan 30, 2016
As the new Policy Fellow with the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, you might think I am obligated to do this. I'm not. This is my dream job because I believe so strongly in their work as they continue to win critical victories for our climate. CCAN is a grassroots, non-profit organization recognized as the best regional climate change non-profit in the country. CCAN’s top priority in Virginia is to build on the bipartisan support they earned last year for a bill that would cut carbon and bring much needed funds to Virginia’s coastal communities suffering from sea level rise-induced flooding. Meanwhile in Maryland, after 4 years of pressure from CCAN supporters and allies, Maryland’s elected officials passed a 2.5 year moratorium on dangerous fracking and exploratory gas drilling in the state (learn more about these victories atchesapeakeclimate.org).
But there’s still much more to be done! For me climate change is the preeminent moral issue of our time as we face a situation never encountered by humanity in its history. With enormous consequences for all of us, our future generations, and all species on this planet, we each have a responsiblility to do what we can. We are at a critical turning point where a great deal of effort right now can go a long way. Enough said.
