BENEFITING: Childrens Cancer and Blood Foundation Inc.
ORGANIZER: Childrens Cancer and Blood Foundation Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 03, 2013
I’m happy to announce that this year I’ll be running the New York City Marathon to raise both awareness and funding for the Children's Cancer and Blood Foundation.
When I was in middle school, a very good friend was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma, which - as you may know - is a form of cancer. Thanks to early detection and proper treatment my friend Matt was able to effectively fight the battle against cancer. Not only did he survive, but he used his experience as a driving force to motivate himself all the way through medical school, He’s now a doctor right here in New York City and saving lives on a daily basis.
Thanks to places like the Childrens Cancer and Blood Foundation and their clinics, 400,000 children with cancer and other blood disorders are seen and treated every year.
I had the pleasure of visiting the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic last week at the NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Center for Children’s Health. I met with Doctor Sujit Sheth and a patient of his, a five year old girl with a blood disorder called Thalassemia. Due to her condition, she requires a blood transfusion from the clinic every two weeks and will for the rest of her life. But, thanks to recent research with funding from CCBF, there are medication options that will allow this young girl to live a much longer and happier life.
Currently, a full annual treatment for her will cost around $50,000 and for a patients like my childhood friend Matt, it's about $100,000. Your donations will not only help aid children like these, but also go to improve the facilities and fund research in these areas.
I’ve been training hard again this year. I ran the full distance on the day of last year’s marathon even though it was, unfortunately, cancelled. Thank you so much for supporting my efforts in 2012, as the funds we raised due to all the support still reached the City Parks Foundation and its many programs throughout the five boroughs.
Over the next three weeks I will be focused on training for the marathon and raising funds for the Children's Cancer and Blood Foundation. Pleas help out and make a donation in support CCBF and wish me luck as I power through 26.2 miles on my way to the finish line on November 3rd.
Thank you very much for any support you can provide to this incredible cause on behalf of children.
