In 2013, nearly half of Covenant Community Care's patients were uninsured, and despite the passage of the Affordable Care Act many of our patients still do not have insurance. Covenant spent $3.6 million on primary medical, dental and behavioral health care for 7734 patients without insurance in 2013. While our uninsured patients paid $484,187 of the cost through our sliding-fee payment scale, we relied directly donations from individual people to fill the gap.
Farley Flood had no insurance when Covenant first started working with him in October of 2011. At the time, Mr. Flood was living in an abandoned house on the west side of Detroit. He had holes in his shoes and was fighting to stay warm. Farley was also fighting for his life. "My kidneys were shutting down. Food tasted like dirt and I lost 50 pounds because I was throwing up so much." As Jonathan Cooper, Covenant's transportation director who worked closely with Farley, put it, “He was homeless, dying of kidney failure and had no medical insurance.”
Farley turned to Covenant for help after a recommendation from his sister. Covenant staff members were able to get Farley on a track towards dialysis and ultimately recovery. "They actually cared; it wasn’t just about money or a job. Everyone truly cared for me. I felt a spiritual connection and the heart of God with each person there."
Covenant also worked to get Farley a better place to live. Within weeks of first seeking care, he was able to find temporary shelter at Crossroads in Detroit through the help of his "guardian angel" Jonathan. Farley likened his overall experience with the staff of Covenant Community Care to an exceptional album of music: "With most albums there's a song or two you love and most you skip; but, if Covenant Community Care was an album, I'd play it all the way through every time!"
Through RiseDetroit, Covenant seeks to grow our ability to provide for the needs of the uninsured in Detroit and beyond.
