EVENT DATE: Jul 18, 2016
The Combined Campaign for Justice (CCJ) raises money to support Community Legal Aid Society (CLASI), Delaware Volunteer Legal Services (DVLS), and Legal Services Corporation of Delaware (LSCD), which provide free, civil, non-criminal legal services to the most vulnerable part of our population.
Have you ever thought about the low-income Delawarean families, children, veterans, seniors, people with disabilities, victims of domestic violence, and the homeless that these attorneys are helping? In Delaware, approximately 12 percent of the population (109,466 Delawareans) qualifies for legal aid. To put these numbers into context, to qualify for legal aid, an individual must have an income below $14,850 per year and a family of four must have an income of less than $30,375 per year.
The three agencies supported by CCJ employ only 25 full time attorneys who are dedicated to providing these necessary—and free—civil, noncriminal legal services to this vulnerable part of our population. Imagine how many more of the 109,466 could receive help if they had a few more full-time attorneys who could help resolve their civil legal issues?
Last year, the three agencies (CLASI, DVLS, and LSCD) provided legal services in 4,744 cases, affecting 12,101 low-income individuals and families. While the number of cases sounds impressive (and is), the demand continues to outstrip the available resources of these agencies, leaving critical legal needs unmet. According to national studies, only about 20 percent of the civil legal needs of low-income and poor Delawareans are being met. The American Bar Association research has found nationally that for every one person who seeks legal assistance, another is turned away because of lack of resources. We are finding the same thing is happening here.
The Combined Campaign for Justice has set a 2016 goal to raise $1 million for these three agencies. To meet this goal, we need your help. One way you can help is through our 4th Annual Combined Campaign Cup, the CCJ's biggest annual fundraising event. The Cup features a BBQ lunch and dinner, as well as options to play golf, tennis, or lawn games (lawn bowling, horseshoes, or baggo).
This year's Cup is set for Monday, July 18, 2016. To sign up, visit our website: delawareccj.org/combined-campaign-cup/
To encourage additional fundraising for CCJ by all of the teams and foursomes competing this year, we are introducing the Cup Fundraising Challenge. The group that raises the money (net of any registration fees or sponsorship) will win the honors of starting on hole #1 on your assigned course on July 18. Good luck to all of the teams in this year's competition, and we look forward to seeing you on July 18!
