Children's Defense Fund's NAA-OHIO Fund wrote -WHY WE NEED YOU
Dear Supporters / Potential Donors:
The Children’s Defense Fund 's mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, and a Safe and Moral Start in life, and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. We provide a strong, effective and independent voice for all the children of America who cannot vote, lobby or speak for themselves. We pay particular attention to the needs of poor children, children of color and those with disabilities.
In line with its mission, two years ago CDF made a commitment to address the issue of mass-incarceration of America's youth, also known as the Cradle-to-Prison Pipeline®. The initiative was launched and called upon folks within communities to take up the charge as "New Abolitionists" to help dismantle the pipeline. Since then, the New Abolitionist Association has been working on the ground in communities in Ohio, New York and D.C. to address the issue of criminalization of our youth.
In American, a black boy has a 1 in 3 chance of going to prison, a Latino boy 1 in 6. And as the Industrial Prison Complex expands, Women and young ladies (youth) are its latest target. This doesn’t happen by accident. There are very real things and systems that drive these numbers. CDF's New Abolitionist Association (NAA) is working to dismantle the Cradle to Prison Pipeline® through addressing the issues that fuel the pipeline including: Pervasive poverty, Health Care Access, Gaps in Early Childhood Education, Environmental Injustice, Disparate Educational Opportunities, Intolerable Abuse and Neglect, Unmet Mental and Emotional needs, Rampant Substance Abuse, and an overburdened and ineffective Juvenile Justice System.
In order to be successful, we need the support of community. Our strategy requires a well thought out and deliberate structure and constructive programming that directly addresses the issues, concurrently, building a network of future leaders and change agents.
Thank you for your support!
