On May 22, 2013, Caesar was diagnosed with Stage IV Renal Carcinoma (Kidney Cancer). After a couple months of back pain then leg and foot numbness that lead to the inability to walk properly and ultimately loss of balance and ability to stand. He was sent to the Fairview Hospital, U of M Campus where a team of specialists performed a very risky emergency surgery to decompress his spine and eliminate the chance of permanent paralysis. The tumor mass is very large and had grown into his vertebrae and fingered into the spinal canal. They were only able to remove a small portion at the time of the first surgery. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment to reduce the size of the tumors. He will have to undergo two future surgeries one of which to remove the kidney which is the cancer source and has a tumor as well. The third surgery to remove the very large mass will be very extensive and include removal of a portion of the lung, removal & reconstruction of four ribs and two vertebra and removal of the remaining cell mass in the spinal canal followed by a long recovery period expected to be upwards of 6 months. He will then start immunotherapy treatments to target the cancer cells and keep the cancer at bay.
Caesar Romero and his family have a long road ahead and need our support. He has lived in Hugo for many years with his wife Paula who has been an active member of the community from Hugo Elementary PTA Fundraising Coordinator, Hugo Good Neighbors Food Shelf Communication & Fundraising Coordinator to working as an advertising consultant with the local newspapers; The Citizen & Press Publications as well as coordinating, Kidz ‘n Biz Fest, Hugo Health Fair, Blood Drives, Wedding Expos and many vendor & fundraising events. Together they have a son Ricky and tragically lost their beautiful daughter, Caesar’s stepdaughter, Melissa a little over a year ago. They had just opened a store in honor of Melissa, Missy’s Boutique & Consignment, in North St. Paul only 11 days before Caesar’s cancer diagnosis.
