BENEFITING: Anxiety and Depression Association of America
Anxiety and Depression Association of America wrote -
When my sister, Jerilyn Ross, was in her mid-twenties, she developed panic attacks during a vacation. For several years she kept that incident and her newfound anxiety to herself. She manipulated her life to avoid places where she might have a panic attack. She felt embarrassed and afraid. She didn’t know where to turn for help, and my family didn’t know how to help her.
Jerilyn eventually found cutting-edge treatment and triumphed over her anxiety. This inspired her to want to help others who were struggling. That’s why she and a group of colleagues and patients founded the organization known today as ADAA — the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. Her vision was to bring together clinicians, researchers, and patients to create awareness, provide education and training, support research, and advocate for the best treatments.
My family is proud to recognize ADAA as it turns 35. We are launching this campaign to support ADAA’s help to others. We lost Jerilyn much too early to cancer five years ago, but she would be so pleased to see how her idea is thriving. The small organization that started in her living room now connects globally with millions. There will always be a need for ADAA to be an advocate, to educate, or simply to say, “You are not alone.”
It’s a better world today for those with anxiety and depressive disorders. The advances in science, treatment, and training have made a real difference in the lives of millions. But the work is not done. People who have these disorders still wake up afraid, ashamed, and alone, not knowing where to turn for help.
Jerilyn’s mantra was “Anxiety disorders are real, serious, and treatable.” It still rings true, but now the possibility of prevention and cure is within reach.
Please donate to ADAA and honor Jerilyn’s legacy. Celebrate ADAA and its efforts to help people have better lives by connecting them to treatment and supporting science. You have a tremendous opportunity to make a real difference. Please seize this opportunity with us by supporting ADAA and making sure it is here, always.
