BENEFITING: CENTER FOR FAMILY REPRESENTATION
EVENT DATE: Oct 07, 2013
The Center for Family Representation performs important but little-known work as a New York-city-(under)funded service providing free legal representation and social-work services to impoverished families (mostly of color) involved in family court in Manhattan and Queens. CFR seeks to keep families safely together--rather than removing children to foster care--thereby improving family outcomes, speeding along court proceedings, and lowering city foster-care costs by over $9 million in 2012 alone. The organization's holistic model (combining legal advocacy, social work services, and a secret sauce: peer mentoring), developed over the last decade, has proved to be such a success that CFR now provides training in the new model to other localities all around the country. The City's funding does not cover the entire cost of providing lawyers, social workers, and parent advocates--so please help us to fill the gap!
