CENTER FOR HOLOCAUST HUMAN R...

Educate Inspire Empower

The Center for Holocaust, Human Rights & Genocide Education: • Educates about of the Holocaust, genocide and human rights issues: • Promotes the elimination of racism, antisemitism and all forms of prejudice; and, • Develops outstanding creative programs and activities regarding these crucial issues.

The Center for Holocaust, Human Rights & Genocide Education (Chhange) at Brookdale Community College (BCC) was established in 1979.  We believe everyone has the obligation and ability to recognize violations of human dignity. Therefore, we are committed to educate, inspire and empower people to take constructive action to prevent human and civil rights abuses and respond to victim needs.

Each year Chhange provides programs and services to over 15,000 students and 981 educators from 211 middle and high schools and colleges throughout New Jersey.    Last year, we offered 18 programs for the broader community attracting over 3,000 attendees.  Chhange’s operations are carried out by 2 full-time and 2 part-time staff and 100+ volunteers.

Chhange has produced outstanding programs, award-winning books, films, traveling exhibits, and curriculum suitcases.

Notable programs include:

* A court-mandated educational program for Monmouth and Ocean County juvenile bias crime offenders using conversations with survivors of the Holocaust, genocides and other victimized groups (81 juveniles have participated, with no recidivism).
 * An interfaith pastoral counseling program attracts participants of all religions who gain a unique perspective on trauma and loss through survivors’ testimonials (400 clergy served).
* An educational program for law enforcement officials offered in collaboration with the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, on tolerance and the protection of individual rights.
* The Generations, a program that reaches out to descendants and family members of survivors to preserve, honor and carry on the survivors’ legacy.
* An Annual Colloquium that brings 2,500 middle and high school students to the campus for workshops on human rights topics.
