EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
Why I'm running:
1. The personal challenge of training for and completing a marathon.
I've loved running since high school cross-country. I love the feeling you get after you've been running awhile and your mind clears and you simply feel in rhythm. I love the sense of accomplishment that follows a long race, and the fact that you needn't compete with anyone but yourself.
2. As a way of getting to know New York - its residents, its neighborhoods, its parks -- while I'm working in the city this year.
I don't know how long I'll ultimately spend in New York, but I know have this year, and may only have this year. I want to absorb as much as I can. Training for the marathon, I'll take runs throughout the city, and I'll also get to meet other runners who are training towards the same goal.
3. To raise money that will help maintain Central Park -- New York's antidote to the "concrete jungle."
Open space is about as essential as friendship to maintaining one's sanity, especially in a city as frenetic as New York. I use the park frequently, going there to run, to read, to meet friends. It's a decompression zone for me, and, I would venture, for many other residents of the city. What's great about the park is that everyone is welcome -- old ladies, dancing children, dogs, people of every social stratum and background can use the park.
