THE STORY:

Ceres wrote -

In 1989, a major environmental disaster shook public confidence in corporate America—the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Nearly 11 million gallons of oil poured into Alaska's Prince William Sound, devastating one of the world's most pristine habitats. Suddenly, the environmental cost of doing business became painfully clear: companies weren't doing enough to account for the environmental and social impacts of their operations. Six months after the spill, a group of investors launched an organization to tackle the problem: a nonprofit called Ceres.

At our founding, Ceres introduced a bold new vision to the business community – a vision of a world in which business and the capital markets promote the well-being of human society and the protection of the earth’s environment.

Ceres relies on individuals and foundations to support our work to make urgently needed progress on arguably the most pressing issues facing humanity today – the threat of climate change and resource depletion.

Today, Ceres is the only U.S. nonprofit harnessing the power of investor and business leadership to build a healthy global economy by building a healthy environment. Ceres’ innovative approach focuses on businesses and investors as catalysts for change in order to address the threat of climate change, water shortages and the depletion of our natural resources and spur investment in low-carbon, clean energy solutions on a global scale.

Mobilizing Businesses
We work with 70 companies to reduce their environmental impact by improving their sustainability performance, including reducing carbon emissions, increasing renewable energy and energy efficiencies and reducing water consumption throughout their operations. We also mobilize major brands to deliver the message that climate change is America’s biggest economic opportunity. Our Climate Declaration, signed by more than 700 companies large and small has put Washington on alert that now is the time to enact policies that tackle climate change and reflect the practices that many corporations are already implementing reduce environmental impacts and transition to a low-carbon economy.

Developing Research and Leadership
Ceres develops high-quality research and thought leadership that puts the risks of climate change and depletion of natural resources in economic terms. We work with businesses, investors and advocates to make the business case for action that protects our environment now and for generations to come.

Promoting Clean Investments
Ceres directs the Investor Network on Climate Risk (INCR), a $12 trillion investor coalition committed to addressing the economic risks and opportunities resulting from climate change and other sustainability challenges. This powerful network of pension funds, socially responsible investment firms, religious and labor funds and major asset owners and managers engages with companies, policymakers and other investors to create investment opportunities in clean energy to help speed the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Engaging Policymakers & Capital Markets
Ceres engages with a wide range of policymakers, including Congress, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Securities and Exchange Commission and insurance regulators, through our Business for Innovative Climate and Energy Policy network, made up of 26 leading consumer companies, to encourage public policies that will move the world toward a low-carbon economy.

We’re helping to improve policies and legislation to encourage clean energy solutions and strong sustainability performance. In the polarized political debate over climate change, the leadership of the business community is essential if we’re going to achieve meaningful policy changes. And Ceres is uniquely positioned to bring the economic voice to the table.

Through engagement, research and advocacy, Ceres is uniquely transforming how corporations, investors and markets integrate climate change and other environmental and social risks into their operations and decision-making.

Your support will help us continue our work to build a sustainable global economy, one that meets the needs of people today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

Thank you in advance for any support you are able to give!!!
