BENEFITING: NATIONAL ASSOCIATION ON DRUG ABUSE PROBLEMS INC
Joelle James wrote -Transitioning to work after a setback is no easy task. Most people simply think of an illness or a temporary lay-off. Even in those situations - think about the last time you interviewed for a job and had to answer the dreaded question “Why Should I Hire YOU?” If answering that question sends chills up your spine, imagine what goes through the mind of an individual in recovery from a Substance Use Disorder.
Now, if answering the common interview question isn’t bad enough, imagine you do not have State identification other than a benefit card, or you have experienced significant hair or tooth loss and now are just uncomfortable with your physical appearance. Additionally you may not have the clothing, shoes, uniforms, tools, and transportation for the first two weeks of employment. The list can go on and on and often times these are items we take for granted.
My colleagues and I often have to search high and low for the little extras that go a long way in supporting our participants’ transition. It is a wonderful sight when those men and women can arrive for an interview confident in their skill set and appearance, armed with information and ready to take steps towards self-sufficiency.
