SNP LA's Fundraiser:

THE CESAR MILLAN CHIHUAHUA CHALLENGE AT SNP LA

SNP LA's Photo

BENEFITING: SNP LA

THE STORY:

The greatest concentration of owned Chihuahuas coincides with the lowest income areas in the Los Angeles area and in LA area shelters, a major reason families relinquish their pets is a lack of access to affordable spay/neuter surgeries. In an effort to raise awareness within the Los Angeles community about this issue, the newly created Cesar Millan Chihuahua Challenge Fund is set to launch July 1, 2014, at SNP LA. Made possible by the Cesar Millan Foundation (CMF), a grant from the ASPCA®(The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) with Spay Neuter Project of Los Angeles (SNP LA) and matching peer-to-peer raised funds, this special service fund will aim to provide Los Angeles Chihuahua owners access to free and low cost spay/neuter services, animal behavior tips, special pet owner offers and discounts, and information about how to ‘spay it forward’ within their communities.

The three organizations will collectively provide $20,000 to this fund. The generous grant denominations of $10,000 from ASPCA, $5,000 in a ‘Pack Leadership Grant’ from CMF, and a $5,000 rolling community match program will be distributed across SNP LA's three California locations: Pico Rivera, San Pedro and Van Nuys. With an average cost of over $100 per dog for spay/neuter services, the initiative, titled The Cesar Millan Chihuahua Challenge is seeking help from private donors and worldwide Chihuahua lovers to keep the momentum going and generate continued funds.

“We want every pet owner in Los Angeles who wants spay and neuter services to have access to this safe and effective procedure,” commented SNP LA Medical Director Dr. Katie Marrie, DVM. “To have successfully cared for 100,000 animals since first opening seven years ago, is a testament to the dedication of our staff and the continued advocacy for spay and neuter by partners like The ASPCA and The Cesar Millan Foundation.”

“The ASPCA is committed to providing better outcomes for the animals of Los Angeles, and we are proud to contribute to this initiative that will provide critical services to the Los Angeles community,” said Jill Buckley, senior director of Community Initiatives for the ASPCA. “We share SNP LA and The Cesar Millan Foundation’s goal to end the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable pets in Los Angeles animal shelters and we know that making spay/neuter services more widely available to the public is a crucial element.

Cesar Millan, renowned animal behaviorist and star of the hit series Cesar 911, may be best associated by the Pit Bulls in his own pack; however, his Chihuahuas Coco and Taco are fan favorites. “My two Chihuahuas are solid members of my pack and I want to do all I can to support them as a breed and educate the community, particularly the Hispanic community, to do all that they can to create balance with their pets and help them live longer, healthier lives,” explained Cesar Millan.

Coco and Taco will be making appearances to raise awareness, beginning with a special open house event at the SNP LA Van Nuys location (14409 Vanowen St, Van Nuys, CA 91405) from 1:00-4:00pm PST on Wednesday, July 2, where visitors will also get the opportunity to meet the Cesar Millan Foundation pack. Additionally, Coco and Taco will be featured on special certificates signed by Cesar Millan, which will be presented to grant participants along with a special tote bag filled with Millan’s tips for dog owners and a checklist for new adopters on responsible pet care. All information on this new grant is available in both English and Spanish to ensure the message is received throughout the community.
