THE STORY:

BIOSPHERE EXPEDITIONS wrote -

Whales and dolphins, including orcas, are under threat worldwide. Biosphere Expeditions is working hard for their conservation around our oceans in places such as the Azores archipelago and the Hebridean islands of Scotland. The Azores archipelago is one of the prime whale and dolphin hotspots in the world and around 30% of the world’s known cetacean species have been recorded there. Hebridean waters provide an important habitat for cetaceans, especially orcas, and are one of the most significant areas for these fascinating mammals. In all we do in our overall goal is to provide detailed information on cetacean densities and distributions as a basis for effective management and conservation, and to further cetacean conervation through research, education, capacity-building and protected area creation.

This project works for the conservation of

Orca (Orcinus orca), harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), white-beaked dolphin (Lagenorhynchus albirostris), Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus), bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus), minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis), blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus), fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus).
