I come from a place where people are very individualistic and are only looking out for themselves. I feel like when I was growing up no one had my back, no one helped others and people were constantly mistreating one another. Most of my life I have viewed the world as an unfair place and as a “dog eat dog” type of place. But viewing the world like this is pretty damaging because it fills people with hostility and negativity and I do not want to continue to live my life like this. That is why I have wanted to go to college from a very young age; so that I can have new experiences and develop a mindset that is counter to the mindset of the people I have grown up around. I want to make sure that in my life that doors are constantly being opened, not closed, and I know that college will ensure many doors stay open in my future. I have seen my mom deal with the frustration of not being able to achieve as much education as she would have liked. My mom did really well in high school but was unable to attend college. I saw that frustration on her and I promised myself I would not allow that to happen to myself. My mom has always wanted me to go to college so I could experience something that she was never able to experience. Without a college education and my dad’s absence, my mom struggled throughout my childhood. While she struggled she did everything she could to give me the best possible life and always encouraged me to chase my dreams, so I do not want to let her down. When I was born I was very small so the doctors said that I would not make it, but here I am. In many ways I am lucky to just be able to walk and talk and I believe that it is no accident that I survived and continue to overcome every obstacle that was thrown my way. I have a purpose on this earth and I know college is part of my greater life plan. While I obviously do not remember these days when I was an infant, I am extremely appreciative to be here and that has taught me a lot. I treat everyone I encounter with love and respect and try to make everyone laugh because I know that we should never take life for granted. Because of this I try to make sure I keep those around me happy and laughing. Given all that I have overcome since the day I was born, I am extremely determined and hard working. I will chase my dreams no matter what obstacles are thrown my way, but having the Perlman scholarship will certainly make my dreams just a little bit closer. This scholarship will help me to live out my purpose and I would be honored to receive such an award.
