CHAMP Camp provides a week-long, summer camp experience for children and adolescents with tracheostomies and those who require technological respiratory assistance, such as the use of ventilators. 2015 will be the 25th anniversary in which our campers will have the opportunity to experience programs that they might never have had the chance in life to do.
Imagine having a tracheostomy or being confined to a wheelchair with a ventilator, yet still having the opportunity to climb a 50' alpine tower, swim in a lake, go paddle boating, perform on stage during a talent show without being self conscious, and even go horseback riding for the first time! Originally, many people thought that these programs could never be done by our population of children, because of their extenuating medical conditions and needs. However, with much caution, care and excitement, all of our campers at CHAMP Camp have the opportunity to enjoy these programs each and every summer.
We are constantly challenging ourselves to create new experiences and memories for our campers. To that end, we took our most aggressive leap yet and decided zip lining should be our camper's next great experience. As one might expect, we let our imaginations run wild! We recently constructed both a 140' and 375' accessible zip line for not only our CHAMP Campers, but for the nearly 800 campers each summer with chronic illinesses or disabilities who enjoy a camping experience at Bradford Woods in Martinsville, IN from other organizations like Riley Children's Hospital Camp Riley, Little Red Door, Easter Seals and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Last but not least, we thought to ourselves, 'what if we constructed a wheelchair accessible tree house where the campers could independently climb up into the trees and hangout together to experience the wonder and beauty of the outdoor wilderness!' This tree house could also serve as the staging and launching areas for the zip lines! The campers are anxiously anticipating this new addition, but we need your help! Please consider donating $25 (representing our 25th anniversary this summer) or more to help make this dream a reality!
