Champions in Action connects disadvantaged youth to life-changing mentors through soccer.
Since 2010, Champions in Action has held five camps with 500 youth from the most dangerous zones of Guatemala City being connected to mentors.
This December, we hope to raise $2,000 with this fundraiser — enough to sponsor an entire team of 10 youth to go to a 2013 camp and be connected to a lifelong mentor.
Champions in Action uses premier soccer camps for two reasons:
- It’s a passion of the youth. Throughout Latin America, soccer is a deep-seated passion that crosses boundaries of race, gender, socio-economic status, and language.
- It’s a platform for mentors. Studies have proven the power of mentorship. Mentoring relationships increase interpersonal skills, self-confidence, and the cognitive and emotional development of youth. Mentors also provide the at-risk youth with guidance on educational and career opportunities, working to keep the youth out of gangs.
