Champions in Action connects the disadvantaged youth of Guatemala to mentors through premier sports camps.
Since 2010, Champions in Action has held five camps with 500 youth from the most dangerous zones of Guatemala City being connected to mentors.
This December, we hope to raise $2,000 as part of the Firefox Challenge — enough to sponsor an entire team of 10 youth to go to a 2013 camp and be connected to a lifelong mentor.
Being a part of the Firefox Challenge also gives us the possibility of winning extra money from Mozilla — so be sure to donate early and often to give us the greatest chance possible... and to change lives in Guatemala forever. The campaign ends January 10th!
Champions in Action uses premier soccer camps for two reasons:
- It’s a passion of the youth. Throughout Latin America, soccer is a deep-seated passion that crosses boundaries of race, gender, socio-economic status, and language.
- It’s a platform for mentors. Studies have proven the power of mentorship. Mentoring relationships increase interpersonal skills, self-confidence, and the cognitive and emotional development of youth. Mentors also provide the at-risk youth with guidance on educational and career opportunities, working to keep the youth out of gangs.
