Join me on Giving Tuesday!
November 28, 2016
The Boys and Girls Club goes deep with my family. I was a “club kid” growing up and having a safe place where people cared about me was definitely a positive impact on my life. One lesson that continues today is that I learned to respect others and be open to someone different than me. We didn’t have boundaries of skin color, neighborhoods or social status. We were all just trying to be first in line for the diving board and cheered each other on playing 4 square. The affects of the world outside of the safe walls of the Club were no match for a basketball tournament, capture the flag or movies in the gym.
Some things never change, and I’m so glad this is one of them. My son, Porter Cash, now goes to the Elizabethton Boys & Girls Club. He’s gone there since he was 5 and loves every minute. He goes to both the afterschool and summer programs. He’s made life long friends and learned life lessons along the way. Porter’s biggest concern at the club is if he gets to sit by his friends in computer lab, if he’ll be the fastest that day outside playing, and if he gets to be on the same team as his friends in a basketball game.
Porter has no idea that a lot of his friends are struggling at home and school. He doesn’t know that when they eat dinner at the club on Friday, for some kids, that’s they’re only hot meal until school breakfast Monday morning. Porter knows he’s fortunate to have great friends, great staff and a great future. We want to ensure all his friends have the same opportunity to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens as they grow up.
This year, I want to raise $1,000 for the Club. I could tell you all that it would do, but instead, I'll ask you to look around. The kid who you know goes home to an empty house? The kid who you don't know will have a Christmas? The Boys & Girls Club can be the difference in their life. I see it everyday.
Please consider giving this season and help make a difference in our community. If you’d like a tour of the club and to meet the amazing people involved in making a difference every day, please contact me directly. I will personally meet you at the club. I hope you will join me in supporting that Club today.
