BENEFITING: HEALTH FOR YOUTHS
On July 25, 2010, an EF1 Tornado touched down in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. There was a great deal of damage and devastation that followed, with downed trees, power lines, damage to homes and property. (http://bronx.ny1.com/content/top_stories/122660/riverdale-residents-clean-up-following-tornado). Some of the damage to plant life and the parks will take years to repair.
On August 22, 2010, our organization, H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths spearheaded a beautification and tornado clean-up project in Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale, NY.
In addition to our clean-up efforts, our project brought awareness to the damage caused by the tornado and ongoing efforts that would be needed to rectify the damage caused by the storm, and also to beautify and maintain such a wonderful park. Our goal was also to get the word out regarding all the wonderful activities taking place at the park, and service projects that all of us can start!
We followed up our beautification and clean-up efforts with a 5K run in the park on November 14, 2010. One year later, we would like to go back to the park to expand and complete the work that we started, inspire other young people to volunteer in the park, and give back to the wonderful Bronx community. Our goals to clean-up post tornado, beautiful parts of the park with weeding and vegetation efforts, and holding a 5K run to spread the word about our organization and the park, were realized in part, however much work still needs to be done. It has been almost one year to the date since our tornado and beautification efforts and we would like to return to the park over the course of eight weeks between the beginning of September and the beginning of November, to continue the project that we started in 2010, and expand the project to include additional beautification, any additional tornado repair work that needs to be accomplished, spreading the word to the local community regarding volunteering in the park, beautifying the entrances to the park at 246th street and 243rd street and preparing areas of the park that currently have flowers and plant life for next year. The innovative part of the project will be that we will have our college-aged students go into the community to spread the word about the work that we are doing, and to encourage others locally to become involved and join in our efforts.
We expect to assist in any remaining tornado repair efforts, galvanize local residents to volunteer and give back to a wonderful park, beautify the boarders of the park between 241st and 246th street on Broadway, assist in litter collection efforts and assist in gardening efforts as warranted.
