#changetheworld with King MC
Organized by: Michelle Hand
EVENT DATE Sep 30, 2014
"I’ll probably never sell a million records or climb Mount Everest/ But the stories of my life will be the stuff made of legends." -King MC, “Fighter”
What’s up, King MCers? I know it’s the middle of the afternoon (feels like it anyway), so probably not so good right? You got that mid-day slump, wishing for a little caffeine. And here I am hogging it all. Sip sip. Don’t tell my boss I’m not working.
What's new... Well, I'm starting this fundraiser. You probably already know that since you're on this page. Lemme tell you a little bit about it.
The dream leading up to this moment started around the beginning of this year. My wife and I were talking about past shows, and the conversation came up that at a recent show a young woman had come up asking about CDs. My wife explained the pricing - $10 for a new album, $5 for older ones and so on. The woman ended up thanking her and walking away. As we discussed it we started realizing the situation for many people at the shows we do, that $10 for a CD might not be feasible. We all know what it's been like the past few years. Some are struggling to make ends meet. My wife and I were there not so long ago.
And yet we're left with the desire to get the music out. For over a decade I've been putting heart and soul into this music that God's called me to, and I've seen Him use it to touch lives. If money's really becoming an issue for people, I want to do something about that. I'd rather have music in hands than not.
So we started doing something that to some might look like bad business: we started giving CDs away for free at shows. Not passing them out on corners or anything, but offering each person who wanted one the chance to go home with an album. The response was overwhelming. Turns out a lot more people were wanting the music than I'd realized, but money had been the one thing standing in the way for them.
Fast forward six months. It's now past the middle of the year, and I've gotten the absolute privilege of doing a number of shows this year in all different types of towns -- well, mostly smaller towns in low-income communities, places ripe for outreaches based around Christian rap music. Because of the new "business model" where business went out the window and ministry became the focus, I was able to say yes to shows where the churches couldn't pay me, and sometimes couldn't cover travel expenses. Let me tell you - those were some of the best shows I've ever done. I'm not talking about the performance (which my wife always says nice things about, but hey, she married me too). Just the experience of meeting pastors and leaders who are working hard to share the hope of Christ in places that desperately need it; and having the opportunity to share my life and music with those people. It's incredible, every single time.
So for the past half -year I've been able to cover the travel expenses, music production costs and whatnot. God blessed me with that ability to do so for awhile and I was grateful for that. But at this point I'm seeing that if I'm going to sustain this type of ministry over the long haul, I'm not going to be able to do it alone. I'll need all of your help.
There's recording costs. Mixing and mastering. Ordering new CDs (I'd like to have a hundred or so on hand to pass out at shows), as well as financing travel expenditures throughout the remainder of the year. All that can start to happen if I'm able to raise just $1000. I'm asking each of you to simply pray about being part of helping us reach our goal. It won't take much - just a willingness from a few hearts to partner with us in whatever way you're able. But it'll mean a lot to me and will enable me to stay in this ministry over the long-haul.
To help make things more interesting we're including these incentives with various donation amounts:
-With every $10 donation you’ll receive a free hard-copy King MC CD to rock out to in the car, at home or wherever you go with your retro-awesome Walkman (not included).
-With a $20 donation you’ll receive a snazzy King MC T-shirt. Sizes S-XL; Color options Black/White or Aqua/Neon Pink (my personal favorite - neons are in, yo).
-If you donate $50 you’ll receive a CD AND a T-shirt - and King MC dyes his hair the color of your choice for a week, with pictures to prove it. Limit 10 (9) - so you’ll want to claim this one quickly. :)
-If you donate $100 – you'll receive all of the above plus a signed and dated picture of King MC wearing an obnoxious homemade costume in public. Yup that's me. It's a good thing I'm immune to embarassment, right? (limit 10)
With incentives this fun we should reach our goal in no time - but it all starts with you. Will you pray about being a part of this?
